Methods: We reviewed our records with 30 patients and 34 positive cinematic RBC scans for GI bleeding from Aug. 1999 to Mar. 2004, and compared with the records from other examinations including panendoscopy, abdominal computed tomography (CT), angiography and colonic scope, and prior surgical procedure were also reviewed, to evaluate the accuracy of our records. Results: Thirty patients with 34 positive cinematic RBC scans were enrolled. Twenty-one of the 30 patients (70%) and 24 of the 34 scans (71%) were successful to localize the bleeding sites by cinematic RBC scans, the accuracy of cinematic RBC scans compared with other examinations or operation was 88% for gastric bleeding, 56% for small intestinal bleeding and 100% for colonic bleeding. Among 30 patients, 5 of 6 patients with recent operation history for GI bleeding were proven that their recurrent bleeding was happened at the formal operation site. Conclusion: The cinematic RBC scans have high accuracy of correct localization of GI bleeding and the operation history of patients is important clue to determine location of bleeding sites.

Technical Considerations of Tc-99m Labeled Red Blood Cell Scans in the Detection and Localization of Gastrointestinal Bleeding Sites

Arteriography to detect gastrointestinal bleeding, which is often intennittent, is only likely to yield diagnostically useful infonnation if the patient is actively bleeding at a rate of greater than 1.0 cclmin at the time of the procedure. To avoid the unnecessary morbidity of a negative arteriogram we studied Tc-99m in vitro labeled red blood cell (RBC) scintigraphy as a screening test for ar...

The potential role of radiolabeled red blood cell scintigraphy in diagnosis of endometriosis

Introduction: Endometriosis is a gynecological disease and disorder that occurs when endometrial cells are shed through the fallopian tubes and are implanted on the surfaces of pelvis and abdomen. They form lesions that respond to hormones of the menstural cycle and will stimulate inflammation. It is controversial whether [99mTc]Tc-RBC scan would be sufficient for lo...

Life Threatening Bleeding from a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour: a Case Report

LIFE THREATENING BLEEDING FROM A GASTROINTESTINAL STROMAL TUMOUR: A CASE REPORT (Abstract): Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are rare tumours of the gastrointestinal tract. They can cause massive gastrointestinal haemorrhage as illustrated in our case. Our patient was admitted to the emergency in shock due to massive haematochezia. The patient was revived with multiple transfusions and c...

Small bowel metastases from primary carcinoma of the lung: presenting with gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Upper gastrointestinal system bleeding should be first taken into account when a patient complains of melena. On rare occasions, gastrointestinal bleeding may be due to primary or metastatic tumors of the gastrointestinal system. Here, we present a case in which the localization of bleeding was demonstrated by Tc-99m red blood cell labeled scintigraphy with the final diagnosis of metastases of ...
